A professor in Rome at the time, Amateis was required to submit his designs for approval to the College of Sculptors in Rome. His work on the monument, crafted from Concord, New Hampshire granite and bronze, showcases his exceptional skill and attention to detail. The Texas Heroes Monument is an impressive 74 feet tall, with the statue of Victory standing 22 feet high at its pinnacle. Victory holds a sheathed sword entwined with roses in one hand and a crown of laurels in the other, symbolizing triumph and honor. The base of the monument, 34 feet in diameter, is encircled by four grand columns made from a single block of granite, each standing 50 feet high. Inscribed at the top of these columns are the words: Patriotism, Honor, Devotion, and Courage, representing the virtues of the Texas Revolution heroes.
The monument is divided into four sections, each facing a cardinal direction and dedicated to different aspects of the Texas Revolution. The north-facing Patriotism column overlooks the entrance to Galveston and features a bronze relief of Sam Houston, surrounded by allegories of peace and war. Beneath Houston are reliefs of five other notable figures, and below the column is a depiction of the Battle of San Jacinto.
To the east, the Courage column showcases a statue named Defiance, a female figure unsheathing a sword. This column commemorates the Goliad Massacre, with the date October 2, 1835, etched beneath it, and a bas relief of the massacre at its base.
The Honor column, facing west, features a bronze figure symbolizing Peace. At her feet are the names of heroes without authenticated photographs, and below her is a representation of Santa Anna's surrender after the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836.
Finally, the Devotion column on the south side includes a medallion of Stephen F. Austin, surrounded by allegorical figures like Davy Crockett and William Travis. Below is a bas relief commemorating the fall of the Alamo, a pivotal moment in Texas history.
