The Exaltation of the Holy Cross church in Gliwice, known locally as Kościół Podwyższenia Krzyża Świętego w Gliwicach, is a captivating blend of history and architecture nestled in the heart of Gliwice, Poland. The Historical Journey of the Church

The origins of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross church trace back to the early 16th century, with the first mention of a wooden church on this site dating to 1516. The current baroque structure was erected in 1623, replacing its predecessor. However, a devastating fire in 1677 necessitated a rebuild, which was completed by 1683 under the guidance of Franciszek Sikora and architect Melchior Stokłosa. Interestingly, King John III Sobieski, a notable figure in Polish history, was among the church's benefactors.

The church underwent significant renovations between 1924 and 1926, expanding its southern nave and adding a chapel and vestibule. A fire in 1980 caused extensive damage, but restoration efforts soon restored its baroque charm, and the church was rededicated as a parish in November 1980.

Architecture and Design

The church stands as a splendid example of baroque architecture. Originally designed as a single-nave structure, it features a rectangular presbytery on the north side, with a sacristy to the west. The interior boasts cross-vaulted ceilings, and the addition of two bays in 1926 expanded the nave. The chapel of St. Barbara adjoins the nave to the east, while auxiliary buildings flank the east and south.

The baroque furnishings, dating from the 18th century, include a main altar adorned with a cross, the Virgin Mary, and possibly Mary Magdalene. The main nave also houses side altars dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, featuring a miraculous image crowned in 2014, and the Holy Family. A side nave altar honors St. Barbara. A fresco above the central arch depicts the Virgin Mary, the Gliwice All Saints church, and saints Francis of Assisi, John of Capistrano, and Bernard of Clairvaux.

The Monastery's Legacy

Adjacent to the church is the monastery, with roots dating back to 1612 when Franciscan friar Bonawentura arrived in Gliwice. Initially a wooden structure, the monastery was later rebuilt in baroque style. Notably, King John III Sobieski stayed here in 1683 during his campaign to Vienna, leaving behind a legacy of linden trees, the last of which stood until 1929.

Despite the dissolution of monasteries in 1810 by King Frederick William III of Prussia, which led to the monks' departure, the monastery was later revived. In the 20th century, it became home to Redemptorist monks, who continue to maintain its spiritual and historical significance.
