The Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg's HafenCity opened in January 2017, designed by Herzog & de Meuron. The 110-metre building incorporates the brick Kaispeicher A from 1963, topped by a glass structure with a curved roofline made of 1,100 individual panels. Construction costs totalled around 866 million euros.
Hamburg's Speicherstadt is the world's largest historic warehouse complex, built between 1883 and 1927 on former Elbe islands as part of the free port. Its brick buildings stored colonial goods such as coffee, cocoa and rubber imported through Hamburg's harbour. The complex has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015.
The Chilehaus in Hamburg's Kontorhausviertel was designed by Fritz Höger and built between 1922 and 1924. The brick structure rises to ten storeys on a footprint of 5,950 m² and is a key work of Brick Expressionism. Its pointed eastern corner recalls a ship's bow. Patron Henry B. Sloman named it after his decades in the Chilean saltpetre trade.
The Hamburger Kunsthalle on Glockengießerwall comprises three interconnected buildings erected between 1863 and 1996. Its collection spans eight centuries of art history, and the prints cabinet holds over 130,000 sheets. The oldest building's brick façade features terracotta medallions and sandstone figures in the Italian Renaissance style.
The ruins of St. Nikolai church at Hamburg's Hopfenmarkt serve as a memorial to victims of war and tyranny between 1933 and 1945. The Neo-Gothic building was completed in 1874, and its 147.3-metre tower was the world's tallest structure until 1877. A basement exhibition documents the wartime destruction of Hamburg in 1943.
