The Musée Fabre in Montpellier opened on 3 December 1828 in the refurbished Hôtel de Massilian, after painter François-Xavier Fabre donated his personal collection of 224 paintings, 40 sculptures and further works to the city in 1825. Subsequent donations from Alfred Bruyas, Antoine Valedau and others greatly expanded the holdings.
Montpellier's Cathedral of Saint-Pierre grew from a chapel of the monastery of Saint-Benoît, founded by Pope Urban V in 1364.
