Scavenger hunt in San Sebastián - or Donostia?

San Sebastián is located in the Spanish Basque Country on the Bay of Biscay, not far from the French border. The name goes back to Saint Sebastian. But what exactly is the name? If you are on a scavenger hunt in San Sebastián, you will always read and hear about "Donostia". This is the Basque name of the city, but it goes back to the same saint. In any case, the regional culture is very important to the people and there were still efforts to create an independent Basque country well into the 21st century. These disputes are now over. The town hall of San Sebastián is a truly unique building that dates back to 1897. At that time, however, it was not planned as the seat of the administration, but as a casino. It was used in this form until 1947. If you stand in front of the façade, you will quickly recognize the shape of a casino.

Other buildings steeped in history can be found in the old town. However, it is nowhere near as old as the city you are exploring on your scavenger hunt in San Sebastián. The historic center was destroyed twice, once in 1489 by a major fire and a second time in 1813 as a result of the reconquest of the city, which was occupied by French troops at the time. As a result, many of the buildings were not constructed until the middle of the 19th century. One exception is the Basilica of St. Mary of the Choir. It dates from the mid-18th century and features elements of Baroque and Gothic architecture.

A much more recent sight is the "Palacio de Congresos y Auditorio Kursaal". It was opened shortly before the turn of the millennium and is a popular venue for events.
