In 1856, a Benedictine monk from Saint John's Abbey in Collegeville became the parish’s first pastor, and the initial combination church and school building was erected on Eighth Avenue. The arrival of Benedictine nuns from Pennsylvania in 1857 further enriched the parish community. These nuns established the first school in Stearns County, teaching in a parishioner’s attic until moving to more suitable accommodations.

Growth and Transformation

As the parish flourished, a more permanent Gothic-style church was built in 1864 at the intersection of Saint Germain Street and Ninth Avenue. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw the construction of a large rectory, a new school building, and the impressive four-story Saint Mary’s Institute, which featured amenities like a bowling alley and a swimming pool.

Tragedy struck in 1920 when the Gothic-style church burned down. However, the resilient parish community embarked on constructing a new church, inspired by the sixth-century Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe in Ravenna, Italy. The design, envisioned by the Rev. Luke Fink and brought to life by architect Nairne W. Fisher, culminated in the completion of the upper church in 1931.

Becoming a Cathedral

In 1933, a fire severely damaged Holy Angels Cathedral in St. Cloud, leading Bishop Joseph Francis Busch to designate Saint Mary’s as the new cathedral for the diocese in 1937. This transition marked a new chapter in the cathedral’s history, with diocesan clergy replacing the Benedictine monks who had served the parish for many years.

The cathedral’s rectory, which had fallen into disrepair, was demolished in 1947. The priests relocated to the convent, while the sisters moved to the top floor of Saint Mary’s Institute. Over the years, the cathedral underwent significant renovations, including the installation of a pipe organ in 1984 and extensive refurbishments following a fire in the lower church.
