Situated in the heart of Wheaton, Illinois, the Church of the Resurrection, often affectionately referred to as Rez, stands as a beacon of faith, history, and community. This Anglican church, which serves as the cathedral parish of the Anglican Diocese of the Upper Midwest, has a storied history that intertwines with the broader narrative of the Anglican realignment in the United States, the charismatic renewal movement, and the migration of evangelical Protestants toward Anglicanism. Founded in 1954, the Church of the Resurrection has grown and evolved over the decades, becoming a spiritual home for many and a significant landmark in the region.
The Church of the Resurrection was planted in West Chicago on Palm Sunday in 1954 by Trinity Episcopal Church in Wheaton. This was a period of significant growth for the Chicago suburbs, and the church quickly became a vital part of the community. The church's first rector, the Rev. Richard Winkler, was a prominent figure in the 20th-century charismatic renewal movement within the Episcopal Church. Under his leadership, the church built a new brick building on Neltnor Boulevard in 1963, designed by the renowned mid-century modern architect Edward Dart.
In 1987, the Rev. William Beasley took over as rector, and the church continued to grow, attracting many evangelicals from nearby institutions such as Wheaton College. However, theological differences with the Episcopal Church led to a significant split in 1993. More than 400 attendees, along with Beasley, disassociated from the Diocese of Chicago, leading to a period of transition and growth that saw the church meeting at Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn for 18 years.
The Church of the Resurrection's journey continued as it became a founding member of the Anglican Mission in America (AMIA), which connected to the Anglican Communion through the Anglican Church of Rwanda. This affiliation eventually led Rez to join the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA), initially affiliating with the Diocese of Pittsburgh. In April 2013, Rez played a pivotal role in the formation of the Diocese of the Upper Midwest, and Stewart Ruch was consecrated as its first bishop in September of that year.
In 2010, a significant milestone was reached when a member of the congregation discovered a vacant Alcoa warehouse in Wheaton. The church purchased the building, and by May 2011, it was officially owned by Rez. The building was dedicated in December 2012, and in October 2015, Rez was designated as the cathedral parish of the Upper Midwest Diocese. Today, the Very Rev. Steve Williamson serves as the rector, continuing the church's mission and vision.

The Church of the Resurrection's current building in Wheaton is a testament to innovative design and architectural brilliance. Originally a 70,000-square-foot warehouse, it was transformed into a vibrant worship space by Skiffington Architects and Baldridge & Associates Structural Engineering. The design features a truss system that expands the column-free sanctuary space, creating an open and inviting atmosphere for worship and community gatherings.
The church's previous building in West Chicago, designed by Edward Dart, was also noteworthy. Described by Landmarks Chicago as an excellent example of a small-scale religious structure, it featured a simple barn-like form with a steeply pitched wood-shingle roof. Although the building was eventually demolished between June 2016 and April 2017, its legacy remains an integral part of the church's history.
The Church of the Resurrection is known for its dynamic and spirit-filled worship services that blend charismatic preaching with ancient liturgy. The priests don traditional robes and read from the Book of Common Prayer, creating a rich tapestry of high church and evangelical elements. One of the church's most celebrated services is the Easter vigil, a four-hour event that includes art, elaborate decorations, dance, dramatic scriptural readings, baptism, and Holy Communion. This service, which began in the 1980s under Beasley's leadership, attracts large crowds and is a highlight of the church's liturgical calendar.
Since 2004, the Church of the Resurrection has been actively involved in church planting, establishing numerous Anglican churches across the Midwest. These include Church of the Cross in Minneapolis, Light of Christ Anglican in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Immanuel Anglican in Chicago, City of Light Anglican in Aurora, Illinois, Christ Church in Madison, Wisconsin, and Church of the Incarnation in Neenah, Wisconsin. Additionally, Rez launched Aviva, a Spanish-speaking congregation that meets in its Wheaton facility, further extending its reach and impact.
Like many institutions, the Church of the Resurrection has faced its share of controversies and challenges. In June 2019, a former member and volunteer, Mark Rivera, was arrested and charged with felony child sexual assault and abuse. This case, along with subsequent allegations and investigations, brought significant scrutiny to the church and its leadership. Despite these challenges, the church continues to strive for transparency, accountability, and healing within its community.
The Church of the Resurrection in Wheaton, Illinois, is more than just a place of worship. It is a community that has weathered storms, grown through adversity, and remained steadfast in its mission to serve God and its congregation. Whether you are a longtime member or a first-time visitor, Rez offers a welcoming and spiritually enriching experience that is deeply rooted in tradition and open to the movement of the Holy Spirit.
