The Robert Schumann House on Zwickau's main market square is the reconstructed birthplace of composer Robert Schumann, born here in 1810. Since 1956 it has housed a museum, concert hall and research centre. The exhibition rooms display handwritten scores, first editions, some 300 letters by Schumann and over 2,000 letters by Clara Schumann.
St. Mary's Church in Zwickau originated around 1180 as a Romanesque hall church and was rebuilt as a late Gothic three-aisled hall church between 1453 and 1563. Its 87-metre tower is a Baroque bell tower dating from 1672. Thomas Müntzer preached here in 1520/21, and in 1935 Reich Bishop Ludwig Müller granted the church the title of cathedral.
Osterstein Castle in Zwickau served as the electoral residence of the Wettins and was rebuilt between 1587 and 1590 as a Renaissance palace under Elector Christian I. From 1770 onward it functioned as a prison, holding notable inmates including Karl May, Rosa Luxemburg and August Bebel.
The Old Gasometer in Zwickau was built in 1874–1875 as the third and largest gas holder at the municipal gasworks. The circular brick structure held 3,000 cubic metres of coal gas using the bell principle. Today it serves as a cultural centre with a 300-seat hall for concerts, theatre and events.
The Kunstsammlungen Zwickau – Max Pechstein Museum traces its origins to the municipal museum opened in 1914 as the König-Albert-Museum. The building, designed by architect Richard Schiffner, originally housed a library, mineral collection, and civic art.
