The story of the Church of the Sacred Heart begins in a time when Roman Catholic worship was fraught with challenges in Britain. Following the English Reformation, Catholics faced severe restrictions until the late 18th century. The Roman Catholic Relief Act of 1791 marked a turning point, allowing the establishment of Catholic churches. While Brighton quickly embraced this freedom, Hove's Catholic community took a more clandestine approach, initially gathering in a private chapel during the 1830s.
The dream of building a permanent church in Hove gained momentum in the 1870s, thanks to the generous bequest of Fr George Oldham. However, the journey was not without its obstacles. The initial site for the church had to be abandoned due to concerns from local estate companies about property values. Finally, in 1879, a suitable site on Norton Road was secured, paving the way for the church's construction.
Architect John Crawley, renowned for his ecclesiastical designs, was tasked with bringing the church to life. Although financial constraints meant that only part of the church could be built initially, the Church of the Sacred Heart officially opened its doors on 28 September 1881. Following Crawley's death, architect Joseph S. Hansom continued the work, expanding the church in 1887. By 1915, with the addition of a Lady chapel and extended aisles, the church was complete, offering a place of worship and community for generations to come.
The Church of the Sacred Heart is a stunning example of Early English Gothic architecture, as envisioned by John Crawley. Constructed from limestone with rock dressings, the church's design is a nod to the 14th century. The chancel, with its apse and vaulted side-shafts, seamlessly flows into the nave, all under a roof of Welsh slate.
Inside, visitors are greeted by a magnificent array of arches and walls crafted from brick, ashlar, and stone sourced from southwest England. The nave boasts a barrel-vaulted roof, while the apse is home to a grand reredos. The church's artistic treasures include carvings of Saints Peter and Paul on the pulpit and an alabaster font adorned with intricate tracery.
Stained glass windows by Nathaniel Westlake add a vibrant touch to the church's interior. These windows, along with murals on the vaults, showcase Westlake's final work. In 2001, a window designed by local firm Cox & Barnard was added, depicting Saint Francis in a stunning display of light and color.
