The Birth of Holy Trinity Church

The mid-19th century was a period of rapid expansion for Hove, driven by the burgeoning Cliftonville estate. As the town grew, so did the need for additional places of worship. St Andrew’s Church, the existing parish church, was bursting at the seams with congregants. Enter Rev. John Fraser Taylor, a visionary curate from St Andrew’s, who took it upon himself to address this need. In 1861, plans for a new church began to take shape, and by 1864, Holy Trinity Church was consecrated, ready to welcome its first worshippers.

Architectural Marvel

Designed by local architect James Woodman, Holy Trinity Church is a fascinating blend of architectural styles. While some argue for its Gothic roots, others see traces of Lombardo-Gothic or even Italian Gothic influences. The church is primarily constructed from red brick, accented with stone dressings and bands of black and yellow brickwork, creating a striking visual effect.

In 1912, Holy Trinity Church gained a rare feature: an open-air pulpit. This addition, uncommon in churches outside the evangelical tradition, made Holy Trinity unique in Brighton and Hove. From Church to Medical Centre

As the 20th century progressed, Holy Trinity Church faced dwindling attendance, leading to its closure in 2007. For years, its future hung in the balance, with various proposals suggesting everything from housing developments to homeless shelters. In 2017, a new chapter began when the church was transformed into a medical centre. This adaptive reuse preserved the building’s historical significance while providing a valuable community service.

In 1992, it was granted Grade II listed status, ensuring its protection for future generations.
