In the early 1920s, Ole Hanson, a visionary real estate developer and former mayor of Seattle, embarked on a mission to create his dream community, a Spanish Village by the Sea. He chose the picturesque coastal site of San Clemente to bring his vision to life. On December 6, 1925, Hanson hosted a grand event, luring potential buyers with the promise of a free chicken dinner and a sales pitch that resulted in the sale of over 300 lots in the then-remote landscape.
Hanson, along with co-founder H.H. Cotton, meticulously planned San Clemente as one of California’s first master-planned cities, encompassing approximately five miles of coastline and extending one mile inland. In 1927, Hanson commissioned architect Carl Lindbom to design a seven-bedroom, seven-bathroom house for his family, perched on a site with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. The house, completed in 1928, was an architectural marvel, featuring an eclectic Spanish Revival style, hand-made Mexican roof tiles, pegged hardwood floors, and imported Italian tiles for the hallways. The house also boasted sliding glass doors and a bathroom for each bedroom, which were quite innovative for the 1920s.
Casa Romantica’s architectural charm is evident from the moment you step through its main entrance, designed as a moon gate. An octagonal tower served as Hanson's study, offering panoramic views of the ocean and the surrounding landscape. The courtyard, with its pool stocked with colorful fish and gardens filled with exotic birds, added to the estate’s allure.
Hanson’s vision for San Clemente thrived until the Great Depression hit. In 1934, the Bank of America foreclosed on Casa Romantica, and Hanson settled his $3 million debt by transferring $12 million in mortgages to the bank. Over the years, the estate changed hands multiple times and underwent several name changes.

In 1989, the San Clemente Redevelopment Agency purchased Casa Romantica, following an appeal by the San Clemente Historical Society. The estate and its gardens were listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 27, 1991. After years of debate regarding its use, the city council decided in November 2001 to transform Casa Romantica into a cultural center, thanks in part to a generous $1.25 million anonymous donation earmarked for cultural arts or educational purposes. Following extensive renovations, Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens opened to the public in 2003.
Today, Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens is a vibrant non-profit organization offering a diverse array of cultural programs. From arts and music to history, horticulture, and literature, the center hosts over 60 events annually, including concerts, workshops, classes, recitals, and lectures. Highlights include the Classical Music Festival and Academy and a specially commissioned version of Shakespeare's Hamlet.
Casa Romantica is also a proud member of the American Horticultural Society. Its 2.5 acres of gardens, which include some of Ole Hanson’s original plantings from 1927, feature a stunning display of Native American plants used by the Acjachmen Indians. The estate’s picturesque setting makes it a sought-after venue for weddings, photography and videography shoots, and corporate events. Publications such as WeddingWire, Sunset magazine, The Knot, and AAA's Westways magazine have recognized Casa Romantica as a top Orange County destination.
In April 2023, Casa Romantica faced a significant challenge when cracks were discovered in the hillside below the house. On April 27, a landslide caused the patio to separate and slip more than 20 feet, leading to the temporary closure of the estate. The landslide also displaced residents of a nearby apartment complex and disrupted rail services on the line below the hillside. Despite these setbacks, the city of San Clemente initiated emergency work to stabilize the hillside, and the Casa Romantica Cultural Center planned to reopen parts of the estate as soon as possible, with some cultural events hosted off-site.
In July 2023, construction of a retaining wall at the base of the hill commenced to protect the rail line. The tracks reopened on July 19, 2023, marking a significant step towards recovery. Casa Romantica’s resilience in the face of adversity is a testament to its enduring legacy and the community’s commitment to preserving this historical and cultural treasure.
